Reasons Behind The Cat in Stray Is Orange

In May, during a closed preview at Kotaku, BlueTwelve producer Swann Martin-Raget addressed the topic. He said, before explaining that the decision to stick with an orange tabby came down to two key factors: production limitations and narrative justification.

” We are a small team, and from a production point of view, it was quite difficult to have something that was really at the level of quality that we wanted, ” Martin-Raget said. “But also … the story is quite important to us, and this character—this is really his story. So we wanted it to be recognizable and unique in the game.”

After playing through Stray until the credits, yes, the orange fur gives the protagonist—who has no name but is inspired by one of the studio head’s own cats—a distinct and recognizable look. But if you are determined to play as a different race, you have options, both unofficially. Over the past week, modders around the world have overflowed the tubes of sites like Nexus Mods with alternative options. (Sorry, PlayStation owners, but mods are only available on PC.) Here is a sample:

A mod, courtesy of Vivi, can make the cat gray or black.

SpaceD0lphin has released a mod that includes a multitude of hand-painted options

Narwhix has released a mod that makes the cat look like Garfield (lasagna not included), in addition to one that changes the decorative badge on the cat’s backpack to show the trans flag.

The NorskPL user has published mods that turn the cat purple or black with a small white mustache (!!!).

PatrickJr from GrimTech has released a mod that gives the cat a white fur with orange accents.

Sirgalahad172 has been on a tear, releasing options for brown, red, white, black and white, white and gray, and-this one is my favorite-the blue-eyed Siamese. (Sirgalahad172 has also released a mod that gives the cat a newsboy cap. It is also compatible with all fur-changing options.)

Customization options are not the only mods that are invading the game community. Already, users have developed methods for playing Stray, a single-player game, in split-screen multiplayer. There is another mod that adds Nyanners cat noises. At this rate, oh no…it it’s only a matter of time before someone turns into a Cheezburger I Can Haz action royale, isn’t it?
